Kellie Meyer is a professional trainer. In 2003, she was part of a team from NAMI Indiana (National Alliance on Mental Illness) that developed a program for prison personnel better understand mental illness and to improve communication and interactions with people under their care. The Indiana Department of Correction awarded her the “Unlocking the Mystery of Mental Illness” award for her updated version of this training. She has developed training for jail staff, law enforcement, community corrections, parole, probation, work release, attorneys, and others. Ms. Meyer has worked extensively to bring key stakeholders together to establish crisis intervention teams in their communities. In 2010, with a team of colleagues, she developed CIT for corrections for the National Institute of Corrections. In 2019, in partnership with the Center for Naval Analysis, she revamped the 40-hour CIT curriculum. Ms. Meyer has developed programming for incarcerated people to better understand their illness and to work as companions for others with mental illnesses.
